The Challenges of Home Organisation
My toxic trait is beginning to clean up one room, while finding mess along the way, putting the original items down and never completing the task. Tell me I’m not alone!! I always end up trying to complete 5 things at once, making it seem overwhelming and that the mess is never ending. Overtime, I have learnt that maintaining an organised home is often more complex than it appears. If you’re anything like me, one of the most prevalent issues is clutter. Over time, my home accumulated various (unnecessary!) items, from old toys and clothing to furniture and paper documents. It honestly lead to stress, anxiety and heightened cortisol levels from just walking into a space. It affected my overall well-being and I felt clostraphobic in my own home. Clutter creates an environment that hinders productivity and peace, making it increasingly difficult to maintain a sense of order.
But what about lack of time? Busy schedules, work commitments, and family responsibilities often leave little room for cleaning and organising. Believe me, I get it! I found myself prioritising daily tasks over decluttering or tidying up the living spaces. This time crunch lead to procrastination, where I knew I needed to organise, but continually pushed it to the bottom of my to-do lists (something else we need to talk about!) As a result, tasks that require simple solutions became daunting, contributing further to the chaos.
I dreaded household chores. The sheer volume of tasks like laundry, dishwashing, and general tidying up led me to become impatient with my kids and husband and I never felt a sense of accomplishment. But.. I got you!!
The Importance of Systems in Home Organisation
I decided enough was enough. I researched. I read blogs. I jumped on Pinterest. I followed every home-organising-page you can think of – I’ll drop my favourites down below. Not that I didn’t know this, but when each item has a designated place, it drastically minimises the likelihood of clutter accumulating. By implementing a clear structure within your living space, you can streamline daily routines, making cleaning and tidying up less of a chore.
One prominent method that stuck with me was Marie Kondo’s KonMari Method. This approach advocates for a systematic decluttering process, where individuals evaluate belongings by asking whether each item “sparks joy.” Once items are sorted, Kondo encourages the establishment of designated areas for everything, making it easy to maintain order. By adopting this method, I found myself not just decluttering but also creating a personalised system for managing my belongings more efficiently.
Another influential way of organising is presented by ‘The Home Edit,’ which focuses on creating functional yet aesthetically pleasing organisation systems. As a teacher, this made my heart flutter! This method prioritises categorisation, utilising bins and labels that not only provide easy access to items but also contribute to a visually appealing environment. By employing tailored organisational systems, we can transform spaces such as kitchens and closets into areas that promote a sense of calm and efficiency. YES! Currently, my favourite place in my house is my kitchen for this very reason!
Ultimately, having well-defined systems in place for various areas of the home leads to a more harmonious living environment. You can take pride in your organised spaces, which ultimately enhances overall well-being. In essence, integrating structured organisation methods into daily life is not merely about tidiness but creating a sanctuary where functionality meets comfort.
Creating Organised Systems for Every Room
Establishing organised systems within each room of your home is a crucial step toward achieving a clutter-free and efficient living environment. By strategically implementing organisation methods tailored to specific areas, such as the kitchen, laundry, and bedrooms, you can facilitate a more streamlined household routine. One effective approach – and pretty much what every influencer online talks about – is to utilise storage bins and drawer dividers to allocate space for various items, ensuring that everything has its designated place.
In the kitchen, for instance, consider investing in clear storage containers for dry goods, which not only optimise space but also make it easier to identify contents. In the laundry room, organising laundry supplies in labeled bins can facilitate a more efficient laundry process. Grouping similar items together, such as detergents and fabric softeners, allows you to quickly find what you need during laundry day. Additionally, incorporating a system for sorting clothes before laundering, such as designated baskets for whites, colors, and delicates, can streamline your workflow and help maintain order.
Bedrooms also benefit from systematic organisation. Utilising drawer dividers can help compartmentalise clothing, making it easier to locate specific items without the hassle of rummaging through packed drawers. Implementing a labeling system for storage boxes beneath the bed or in closets further simplifies the retrieval process, ensuring that your personal belongings are accessible and visually arranged.
By envisioning your ideal organised space and committing to the implementation of these practical strategies, you can cultivate a sense of calm and control in your home. An organised household not only enhances your efficiency but also enriches your daily living experience, allowing you to focus on what truly matters.
The Instagram Pages You MUST Follow
I’ve curated some of my favourite instagram pages that have helped me organise my house and develop strong systems so that I am not constantly chasing my tail. I’ve included a lot of fellow Aussie’s because, well, we love some good local support!
Happy organising!
The Home Edit
As I mentioned above, The Home Edit girls are brilliant at colour coordination and making everything neat and functional. How perfect is this pantry! Now in all seriousness, I have 3 kids and this isn’t always practical considering I don’t have a huge pantry with beautiful pullout drawers. However, I have managed to implement their bin/basket method as well as consistency in all my jars to create a seamless look.
The Organising Platform
While this is on TikTok, her instagram page has a bigger following and much more content. Aussie based mum, Chelsea shares practical ideas and budget based ideas to make our lives much simpler and easier!
Mise En Place
Anita is queen when it comes to mum hacks, space savers and time savers! I’ve used a lot of her ideas in our house and let me tell you, the kids are even using it! She’s funny to listen to as well, keeps you on your toes!
The Organised Everyday Mum
I absolutely love this page because it is so relatable. Check out this car organisation! Definitely next on my hit list. I’m always finding random stuff in my car and everything I need to access is always shoved in the middle compartment. We bought a new car recently and Hubby is already having anxiety about what it looks like!
Collectively Organised
I love a good aesthetically pleasing social page! Jess is definitely home goals. She has a great ‘recap’ series going on at the moment too, so you can see what her week looks like. She posts real houses, real organisation and completely relatable scenarios.
